El Morocco - Tayport Distillery

El Morocco

El Morocco

A cocktail originally from North Africa, but was made famous in Manhattan, New York.

An Italian immigrant, John Perona, opened a speakeasy during the prohibition era, and it soon became one of the most popular establishments of New York. El Morocco on 54th Street was visited by the elitist of clientele from politicians to entertainers and celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe and Errol Flynn. Photographs taken at the Morocco were always distinguished by the iconic zebra stripes featured on the sofas.

By the end of World War II, El Morocco had moved venues and it began to loose its authenticity. John Perona passed the establishment down to his son and since then it has passed through many hands. Ironically, a new high rise called the Milan is being built on the site where the old club once stood. El Morocco is faintly remembered by the zebra stripes on the pavement and the limited edition photo album that was published for El Morocco regulars. An album filled with vintage photographs, providing a distant memory of the once extraordinary cocktail bar.

In sharing its name with one of the most renowned speakeasy’s during the prohibition era, the El Morocco has made quite a name for itself.

It is a gorgeous little fruity number! If you are looking to use up any left over alcohol in the cupboard after the festive season, this is a good one to do!

— 15 ml Apple Never.25 Eau de Vie
