Tayport Blackcurrant Liqueur is a Scottish crème de cassis, made at our distillery in Tayport, Fife, with blackcurrants grown in Angus. Use it wherever a recipe asks for crème de cassis or cassis liqueur, starting with a Kir Royale.
If you'd like to learn more about the history and cocktails of this style of liqueur, read our guide to crème de cassis.
Scotland's crème de cassis
Crème de cassis is the French name for a sweet blackcurrant liqueur, best known from Burgundy and from the Kir Royale. Ours is the same style of drink made with Scottish fruit: whole blackcurrants grown in Angus, across the Tay from the distillery, and macerated in Tayport.
It all started with Julie and Andrew Husband at East Adamston Farm in Angus, where the recipe took shape. The fruit is macerated carefully to capture the blackcurrant at its most vivid: the tartness, the depth, the natural sweetness that no flavouring can replicate.
At the 2024 Great Taste Awards the judges gave it two stars and wrote: "A deep, wine-coloured drink reminiscent of pinot noir. Beautifully fruity and unmistakably blackcurrant, bursting into life at the back of the tongue. The texture is rich and accomplished. Bravo." It also holds a Great Taste star from 2020.
If you usually buy French cassis, pour this the same way: topped with sparkling wine for a Kir Royale, with dry white wine for a Kir, over vanilla ice cream, or sipped slowly on its own.
Is blackcurrant liqueur the same as crème de cassis?
Yes. "Cassis" is French for blackcurrant, and crème de cassis is the name for a sweet blackcurrant liqueur. The "crème" refers to the sweetness; there is no cream or dairy in it. Tayport Blackcurrant Liqueur is a Scottish crème de cassis at 20% ABV, and you can use it measure for measure in any recipe that calls for crème de cassis or cassis liqueur.

How to drink
Tayport Gin Sour
1. Chill the Glass
Fill your serving glass with ice while you prepare the drink.
2. Shake the Ingredients
In a cocktail shaker, combine:
- 50ml gin
- 25ml fresh lemon juice
- 20ml simple syrup
- (Optional) 1 egg white for a silky texture
Dry shake (no ice) for 15 seconds if using egg white, then add ice and shake again for about 30 seconds until well chilled.
3. Strain and Garnish
Empty the ice from your glass and double strain the cocktail into it. Serve straight up. Garnish with a lemon twist, and if using egg white, a few drops of bitters for aroma and flair.
