Supporting Local - Family Businesses
Tayport Distillery’s ambition has always been to create local gins, gins from Fife that were distilled and bottled on-site. We did not want to cut any corners, producing our own premium spirit using local Scottish Malt Barley. We love a day in the distillery when our mash tun is churning, our fermenter is smelling deliciously bready and the still is running. After a week of hard graft, then we really get into the flavour of our spirit, whether we are making Gin, Vodka, Liqueurs or Eau de Vie.
Tayport Distillery started as a home-hobby, with absolutely no expectations to become an award-winning distillery. Kecia, our Director and Distiller, would study and experiment with local fruit and botanicals. Over the years Gin became extremely popular and it wasn’t until 2017, she thought maybe this could be something?. A year and a couple of distilling courses later, Kecia started her own business. Mary and Alasdair, her daughter and son, join her in the distillery now helping to bring her spirits to life. Tayport Distillery offers Distillery Tours and Tastings where you can hear more about our history and unique stories!

What is the History of Gin?
The inventor of gin is widely thought to be a Dutch physician, Franciscus Sylvius or Franz de le Boe, who used it for medicinal purposes back in 1550. The Dutch were very close neighbours of Britain and at times allies in the war. The British troops fighting Louis XIV alongside their allies appreciated the calming effects of Jenever (Dutch gin) before heading into battle. Hence, the phrase Dutch Courage.
Gin was very cheap and thought to be a cure for gout or indigestion. Cheaper than French wine or brandy. And in the mid-eighteenth-century Gin took hold in English Society. The use of Gin began to get out of control with the average Londoner drinking over 14 gallons of spirit a year which became the reason the death rate in London was exceeded by the birth rate giving it the nickname; Mother’s Ruin.
This is a very brief overview of the history of Gin. However, if you would like to understand more about Gin, why not book yourself onto one of our Blending Experiences where you can create your very own gin!
